21.08.01 Figure drawing workshop

The Department of Fine and Applied Arts of Technikon Pretoria will present a figure drawing workshop for beginners to experienced drawers. The workshop will be presented by Carl Jeppe, who will take the students through the various stages of figure drawing, working in pencil, charcoal and inks, and covers basic to advanced figure drawing principles. Materials will be supplied, but if you have any special preferences you are welcome to bring your own materials. Models will be supplied. If you are from out of town, excellent accommodation is available, at reasonable rates, but please book early.

A certificate of attendance will be issued after the successful completion of the workshop. The cost for the three-day workshop is R900 (this includes refreshments and lunch). A deposit of R200 is payable to secure your place, with the balance of R700 payable at the start of the course.

There is the most incredible photo resource on the internet at RIT. You will find a variety of online photographic mailing lists for those who are interested in current debate on almost any photo topic. There are photojourn, pinhole, street photo, art photo, astra photo, photo philosophy and many others to check out on the RIT site. As a black-and-white printing resource, the pure silver list is an amazingly useful discussion forum. You will find discussion groups listed at www.rit.edu/~andpph/photolists.html





SUBMISSIONS

14.08.01 Entries invited for Vuleka Art Competition

The annual New Signatures art competition, presented by the Arts Association of Bellville, has put on a brand new jacket: in future it will be known as the Vuleka Art Competition, it will be sponsored by Sanlam, and for the first time the overall winner will receive R1 000 and a return flight to Paris!

Vuleka is the Xhosa word for open, and in this context open can be interpreted in numerous ways: open to the talent of all artists (18 years and older) who have not yet had a solo exhibition; open to paradigm shifts in one's thinking; open to creativity, innovation and adventurous art; and accessible to all cultures.

The categories are: best work in oil and acrylic, best work in watercolour, best graphic work, best sculpture, best work in another medium, best photographic work and best ceramic work. The winners, judged by an independent panel, will receive cash awards of R500 per category. Merit prizes to the value of R750 will also be awarded. The closing date for entries is October 1. The selected works will be on exhibition in the Arts Association of Bellville Gallery from October 9 to November 1. For further information and entry forms phone Debbie or Rentia at (021) 918-2301.

Conditions for entry

  • The competition is open to all artists, 18 years and older, who have not yet had a solo exhibition.
  • Only original works of art completed during 2000/2001 may be entered.
  • There is no limit to the number of works that may be entered.
  • Only a limited number of works will be selected for the exhibition.
  • All works are submitted at the owner's risk. Neither the Arts Association nor Sanlam will accept any responsibility for the damage, loss or theft of any artworks while in transit or on exhibition.
  • Entry fee: Members of the Arts Association of Bellville: R10 per work; non-members R12 per work.
  • The entry fee is non-refundable.
  • Do not phone the gallery to inquire whether your work has been selected for the exhibition. The names of the selected works and prize winners will remain confidential until the opening on Tuesday October 9 2001 at 7.30pm.
  • The decision of the selectors is final.


14.08.01 Spier Outdoor Sculpture Biannual

Spier and Public Eye are proud to announce the first Spier Outdoor Sculpture Biannual, to be held in 2002 in conjunction with the Jan Marais Nature Reserve, Stellenbosch.

Artists are invited to submit proposals for work to inaugurate an Outdoor Sculpture Biannual, to be held in two venues: the grounds surrounding Spier (a wine estate, open-air theatre, recreation area, hotel and conference centre in the winelands near Stellenbosch. See www.spier.co.za for a virtual tour of the Spier Estate) and at the Jan Marais Nature Reserve (a fynbos park in the centre of Stellenbosch). Work at the Spier Estate should be suitable for outdoors, and durable for a 3-month period. Proposals for the Jan Marais Nature Reserve venue should be more site-specific and of a relatively permanent nature

(Unfortunately, no security can be provided).

Two special events will be held at Spier to coincide with the Sculpture Biannual:

- A symposium on art in public spaces, organised by Public Eye.
- An exhibition of artists' drawings, maquettes and documentation of production and installation.

The exhibition will open at Spier in the second week of January 2002, followed by a second opening at Jan Marais Nature Reserve in second week of February. Both sections of the exhibition will close at the end of April. An exhibition catalogue will be produced and will be available by mid-March 2002.

A panel (yet to be appointed), consisting of Public Eye and Spier representatives as well as an independent adjudicator, will select fifteen participants from the proposals submitted. Durability is a key criterion for selection. For the Jan Marais Nature Reserve component of the show, preference will be given to land-art _ the installation of which could be completed some time after the opening. This will allow visitors to the exhibition the opportunity of watching the artists at work.

Each of the chosen artists will receive a fee of R10 000. Further funding is to be raised by the artist. Public Eye and Spier will provide letters of support for such fund raising applications. All work submitted could be for sale, and in this case, would be subject to a 15% sales commission to Public Eye.

Proposals must include a budget, technical specifications and a provisional installation schedule.

Time Line: Sculpture project and symposium

  • First week August: Call for proposals.
  • Sunday August 19 at 10.00am: Site visit with interested artists (Spier Farm stall and Coffee shop).
  • September 30: Deadline for proposals to be handed in for selection.
  • Mid October: Selected artists commissioned. Issue of press release for Spier Outdoor Sculpture Biannual and Public Art Symposium.
  • Mid January: Opening at Spier.
  • End of January: Opening at Jan Marais Nature Reserve. Each artist to have separate walk-about.
  • 2nd week January: Spier tours by participating artists, workshops and talks to be held.
  • Every Sunday: Guided tour by trained guide (also by appointment).
  • Middle March: Launch of catalogue, Symposium on Public Art to be held
  • End April: Spier Estate exhibition to be dismantled, restore landscape, wrap-party and launch for 2nd biannual to be held in 2004.

    07.08.01 Red Bull Creativity Contest

    What can be done with a lot of inspiration and a can of Red Bull?

    Anyone who has ever used a can of Red Bull energy drink knows that it benefits the body by increasing physical stamina. Red Bull also benefits the mind by enhancing concentration and speeding up mental reactions. To bring this philosophy to life South Africa's first Red Bull Creativity Contest is being launched.

    Red Bull is looking for the most imaginative works of art created from the now famous blue and silver can. We are looking for inspired South Africans to rescue Red Bull cans from their usual fate. Use the can, a little inspiration and some imagination to conceive of a work of art: a sculpture, collage, piece of jewellery, a mobile, a piece of furniture, a fashion accessory or something that no one has thought of before.

    Your only constraints are the limits of your imagination. All we ask is that the Red Bull can be the focus of the artwork.

    History of the Red Bull creativity contest

    Although this is the first Creativity Contest to take place in South Africa, successful contests have been held in Austria (the home of Red Bull), Germany, Holland, Switzerland, United Kingdom and New Zealand since 1997. The Red Bull Creativity Contest offers a platform for any person, regardless of age, to take part. Past entrants have included everyone from students to grandparents and from architects to professional artists. The Creativity contest is a true expression of the imagination with little or no restriction placed on the budding artists' entries.

    How the contest works

    The Red Bull Creativity Contest is a national event. Artists, architects, students, Red Bull friends and all those in-between are invited to submit their works of art (or creations). These will be collected regionally, then catalogued and photographed. We need these to be sent, preferably delivered, to one of the collection points in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or Port Elizabeth.

    The final exhibition

    The final exhibition of South Africa's artistic representation of Red Bull through the can will be held in dramatic fashion at Spark The Gallery in Norwood, Gauteng between October 23 and 28 2001. A variety of specialist evenings will be implemented for the duration of the exhibition in order to set the Creativity Contest apart. Red Bull will create an experience that will certainly stimulate the artists, their work and our guests and friends.

    A combination of some of South Africa's art critics and other personalities will be on hand to intellectually interpret the artists' work and to determine which art piece best represents Red Bull and its philosophies as a brand.

    The agony and ecstasy

    For those who pained, struggled and suffered in order to live the life of the artist (even if for just a brief period) there is just reward! Red Bull will supply the three artists who best convey the Red Bull personality through their work with a set of wings that will take them to the artist's haven, Paris. Red Bull will ensure that the experience is an enlightening one with an array of activities planned to take the winners on a trip through the history of humans and their perception of art and creation. We will ensure that their time abroad will be both educational and entertaining. The three prizewinners will also receive R15 000, R10 000 and R5 000 respectively to further enhance their experience in Paris.

    17.07.01 Arts Resource Centre in Cape Town

    This Resource Centre, to be launched in September, will be the first institution of its kind in South Africa. Its aim is to provide all local artists and technicians with information, training opportunities, services, infra-structural support and facilities they need. In order to offer this the Resource Centre is collecting the contact information and description of every cultural organisation around Cape Town. If this applies to you, send your contact details and a description of your organisation to the Centre. Information in any of the following areas is especially of interest: exchange programmes on arts management; youth development programmes; musicians' unions and community-based organisations that deal with development.

    17.07.01 Cape Cow Carnival

    The Cow Parade first took place in Zurich three years ago. A veritable herd of life-size fibreglass cows, painted and altered by local artists and designers, drew huge crowds to the city and apparently generated a turnover of $100-million. Chicago, Kansas and New York followed suit, all drawing similar responses. Cape Town is the latest to be hosting this event with a herd of 200 cows to be situated throughout the city, from St George's Mall to Camps Bay with a mobile herd to be moved around as well.

    The Cape Cow Carnival invites submissions from known and unknown artists, students and collectives. Everyone is invited to submit up to three designs from which one may be selected. Each will be teamed up with an appropriate corporate sponsor who will invest a significant amount of sponsorship into the project. Each artist or group will receive R5 000 for their trouble and will be featured in the Cape Cow Carnival Coffee Book. Each cow will be permanently labelled with the artist's name. At an auction afterwards the cows will be auctioned for charity. The organisers promise extensive media and public exposure.

    10.07.01 Database of South African photographers

    The South African Centre for Photography is compiling a database of all Southern African photographers.     10.07.01 The Umlilo Photographers' Association

    Umlilo Photographers' Association is the brainchild of a group of so-called "street photographers" from the disadvantaged communities of the Cape Peninsula who saw a great need for coming together, in order to effectively highlight the challenges and obstacles facing them within the photographic industry. Umlilo attempts to positively respond to these challenges by addressing them in a manner appropriate to all those affected individuals and role players.

    Background and purpose
    The Umlilo Photographers' Association project's establishment was encouraged by the benevolent intervention of Kodak USA, who channeled some donor funds through the SA Centre for Photography. These donor funds were directed at promoting both theoretical and practical basic photographic training workshops for "street photographers". It was decided to centralise the operation of the association at Guga S'thebe in Langa, in order to speedily and effectively spread the campaign to its intended beneficiaries. This decision has made the project more accessible to disadvantaged photographers and students.

    A darkroom and an exhibition hall were set up at Guga S'thebe. Peter Magubane, a prominent African photographer, officially opened the facility, on April 22 this year, with a view to furthering the objectives of Kodak USA.

    The darkroom facility, its equipment, back-up stock and six months aftercare programme, were made possible by the remaining unutilised funds from the Kodak sponsorship, by the SA Centre for Photography as the official appointed trustees. Initially, this project has to operate as a satellite of the South African Centre for Photography, based at UCT's Michaelis School of Fine Art and Photography. It also has to operate as a pioneer project, with the intentions of setting up similar, bigger satellites in other townships, in and around the Cape Peninsula in the near future if funds permit.

    Aims
    1. To explore the photographic medium as a means to open up awareness of artistic expression.
    2. To create job opportunities.
    3. To create an awareness of photography in schools under career guidance options.
    4. To create a photographers' forum for previously disadvantaged individuals where collective bargaining is possible.
    5. To develop the community in terms of accessing infrastructure, financial and technical assistance.
    6. To strategically develop and diversify the association into other media options, such as journalism, videography, filming, desk top publishing, digital photography and imaging as well as graphic design.
    7. To impart all of these media to the youth, women and other interested parties, thereby encouraging equality.
    8. To invite various outstanding artists and experts in related fields to come and address the association at regular intervals and share their experience.
    9. To stage and participate in local, national and international photographic exhibitions, with the aim of exposing individual talents here and abroad.
    10. To stimulate and revive photography with the intention of encouraging and creating public awareness about the importance of photography in the preservation of their historic and cultural heritage.
    11. To be vigilant of exploitation and piracy of members' work by unscrupulous elements in the industry.

    Current activities and successes
    The association's office is at Guga S'thebe, and is now striving to obtain equipment such as computers with printers, scanners (flatbed and negative), a fax machine, a photocopier and an overhead projector. Our black and white printing darkroom has been fully functional since April 22. An exhibition of work by five members of Umlilo Photographers' Association is currently running at Guga S'thebe. New exhibitions are planned on a regular basis.

    Anele Ngoko, one of the members, has been conducting a workshop in basic photography with participants from Langa High School since May 16. Four members of the group are currently engaged in management and administration classes at Khanya, and much of the knowledge acquired in these courses will be of great importance to the building and nurturing of our association. Black and white printing sessions have been held, initially under Geoff Grundling of the SA Centre for Photography, who made the facility's installation a reality. At a later stage a few experienced members took over from him.

    The success of Umlilo Photographers' Association is important for many of the aims outlined in this document.

    Our strengths
    1. Our members have shown a strong commitment to achieving the goals of the association. Most work has been voluntary and at our own expense. This is a great sacrifice for most members.
    2. Members have a passion for the medium, even though it has always been seen as an expensive and exclusive activity.
    3. We perceive a demand in the market for images of life in the townships.
    4. Our members are working mostly in the townships and are well placed to document African life and environment.
    5. By encouraging the acquisition of skills in technology and business our members are being empowered to compete in the field as professionals.
    6. By creating a national database we are well placed to create a substantial image agency for African photographers.
    7. Many professionals and experts have expressed an overwhelming interest in contributing to the growth and success of the association.

    Challenges
    The association is faced with a horde of obstacles.
    1. A lack of photographic equipment such as cameras and accessories, film, printing paper and chemicals at the centre.
    2. Members are hampered by the cost of materials, which stifles creativity.
    3. The lack of basic office equipment and the absence of a telephone line, with modem, make efficient administration and communication difficult.
    4. Progress is slowed by the fact that active members are carrying out tasks without remuneration and are carrying out-of-pocket expenses themselves.

    10.07.01 Online project - Call for submissions

    JavaMuseum - Forum for Internet Technologies in Contemporary Art (www.javamuseum.org) is happy to launch its second online project, entitled 'Art as software - software as art - software for art'.

    This call is addressed to artists and software developers who use the environment of software as a means of artistic expression, who develop software applications for artistic purpose. The works to be submitted may not date from earlier than 1995 and there are no limitations concerning the used developing technology or environment.

    Terms for work/software:
    - Not larger than 5Mb
    - Fully functional
    - Installer and uninstaller integrated
    - Available for free download and free use (at least for a limited evaluation period)
    - Language: mandatory English, but additional languages are welcome
    - Platform: PC

    Each artist/developer may submit up to three works/software applications. Software developing companies are welcome to submit applications as long as all participating developer(s) are listed individually. The project intends to spotlight creative work in the technological area between 1995 and 2001.

    A selection of the best submissions will be published as an online exhibition at the end of 2001. The exhibition will remain as a permanent art resource on the JavaMuseum Server.

    19.06.01 PPC Cement's Young Concrete Sculptor Awards

    Artists "young" in the art of sculpting are invited to enter the 10th annual PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards competition. Since its inception, the competition has grown from strength to strength and has been run under the auspices of the Association of Arts Pretoria and sponsored by PPC Cement. Concrete must be used as the main material for the sculpture, but other materials such as wood, bronze and glass may be incorporated in the work. A maximum of three entries per artist may be submitted and a nominal fee of R30 per work is payable to the Association of Arts Pretoria. There are no restraints as to the size of the sculptures, which will be exhibited both inside the gallery and outdoors in the PPC Cement Sculpture Garden at the Association of Arts Pretoria.

    This year only two prizes will be awarded - one for the Best Sculpture on Exhibition and one for Technical Excellence in Concrete Sculpture. The R20 000 prize-money will be shared equally between the winning artists in each category, ie R10 000 each. It was agreed that one artist could in fact win both prizes if his/her work fulfilled all the judging criteria for best sculpture and technical excellence in concrete sculpture.

    "We decided to deviate from the traditional first, second and third place prize system as there have been occasions when the second or third prize winning work was technically excellent and should have achieved the same kudos as that afforded the first prize which, although well thought out and innovative (eg an installation), was not crafted with technical excellence," said Beth Harris, public relations manager of PPC Cement.

    Works must be submitted to the Association of Arts Pretoria on either Saturday 22, Tuesday 25 or Wednesday 26 September 2001. The official opening of the exhibition and prize-giving ceremony will be held on the evening of 1 October 2001 and the exhibition of all works entered will continue until Thursday 11 October 2001.

    PPC Cement and the Association of Arts Pretoria are also organising a full-day workshop, which will demonstrate the versatility of, and the best practices in, working with concrete. The workshop will be held at the Cement and Concrete Institute in Halfway House on Tuesday, 7 August 2001 for a fee of R60 per person.

    Experts in various fields of concrete technology will cover topics such as: how concrete works; demonstrations on using pigments, super plasticiser, latex and lime; finishes in concrete; and moulding.

    Beth Harris continued: "This is the second time that a workshop of this nature has been arranged and based on last year's success, we are confident that the students and artists who attend will benefit from the knowledge they will glean from this workshop.

    "We look forward to receiving this year's entries and to see what students from all over South Africa can produce. Previous winners have gone on to successful careers in sculpting, and this is truly encouraging both for PPC Cement, as the sponsors, and for aspiring sculptors."

    05.06.01 Gallery 111 invites proposals

    Gallery 111 invites all creative artists, poets and experimental musicians and performance artists to submit proposals for exhibitions and performances. The gallery in its new venue is at present compiling a time table of events for the coming year and beyond.

    There are two distinct areas at the gallery; the ground level and the basement. The basement is suitable for performance work and also has conventional gallery hanging facilities. There is a bar and kitchen area for all catering needs adjoining the basement. The ground level is a high ceilinged space ideal for all types of work and has numerous electricity outlets suitable for video and other new media installations. There are a number of transitional spaces such as the entrance area and stairwell which can be utilised for small exhibitions and installations.

    Gallery 111 encourages the participation of student artists and other beginners. We offer art tuition and life drawing conducted by Maggie Dunbar and Jeff Lok. As the need arises there will be computer graphics courses for fine artists.

    The gallery is available for private functions. There is safe parking in Commissioner Street and when there are gallery openings and functions we have a visible security presence. An added attraction is the availability of Big J's sports pub upstairs which serves drinks and meals at very good prices and has dart boards and a pool table. The gallery is situated on a major bus and taxi route. If you need to view the gallery it is advisable to phone 083 763 8216 to make an appointment as the space is run on a part-time basis by volunteers. Costs involved with exhibitions and functions are highly negotiable and are tailored to each event.

    29.05.01 'ArtSci2001: Catalyst for Collaboration'

    Art & Science Collaborations, Inc (ASCI) presents 'ArtSci2001: Catalyst for Collaboration', a symposium (November 2-4 2001) at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY). Full details: www.asci.org.

    How can the discoveries of scientific research and the powerful metaphors of art combine to impact society at large? Some artists and scientists are exploring the promise of art-sci collaborative projects. This third international symposium produced by Art and Science Collaborations, Inc (ASCI) will feature multimedia presentations on extraordinary projects involving artists and scientists, ranging from photographs rendered in hybrid grass, to a musical score based on brain activity, to sculpture grown from living tissue. The presenters will discuss the opportunities and pitfalls of collaborating across disciplines and invite questions from the audience.

    Stephen Jay Gould and Rosamond Purcell, authors of the recently published book Crossing Over: Where Art and Science Meet will deliver the keynote address on Friday November 2 from 7-8pm at CUNY. Tickets are available to the general public.

    In addition to 16 fascinating art-sci presentations, Saturday and Sunday's all-day programming includes breakout, poster and resource sessions, plus many networking opportunities. The symposium will attract artists, scientists, technologists, writers, scholars, humanists, educators, and all others interested in the synergy possible when the barriers between disciplines are removed.

    22.05.01 Multi-disciplinary art exchange

    Moving Clay and Friends is a multi-discipline art group based in the North West of England just south of Manchester. The group is at present in negotiation with several official bodies in the Manchester area with regard to organising a series of exchange exhibitions with groups from within the Commonwealth to coincide with the Commonwealth Games next year, at suitable venues within easy reach of the Games. This is to be followed, hopefully, by return exhibitions during the following year. This is a very exciting project that has the potential to raise awareness of the arts of the Commonwealth to a very large audience from all over world.

    Moving Clay and Friends, established in 1996 by a group of newly qualified ceramicists, has evolved into an egalitarian multimedia artists' group. Members meet monthly to exchange subject-specific information to support each other's pursuit of personal, professional and artistic development. Members are encouraged to visit exhibitions, attend conferences, seminars and masterclasses and, upon their return, to disseminate their information amongst the group.

    Members are also encouraged to organise events, workshops and exhibitions, always including members with no prior experience, primarily in venues not normally associated with the arts, in an attempt to generate and facilitate wider involvement with the arts within the community. The group supports and assists members to exhibit at venues they would not normally be able to exhibit at, as individuals, assisting their personal development by providing professional learning opportunities.

    13.03.01 Site specific sculpture for Italy

    The Chianti Sculpture Park is currently being established in Tuscany, Italy. Since the area of Chianti, in Tuscany, is both renowned for its artistic and historical traditions and for its nature, the Park requires very site-specific installations.

    We are in the process of sourcing site-oriented sculptors from all over the world, especially from Eastern Europe, North America and Latin America. All the sculptural ideas and projects will be screened by the Artistic Committee of the Park.

    The selection will be mainly based on how site specific the artwork will be. We kindly request interested artists to send us a few photos of their works. We will contact the selected artists and guarantee a return air ticket to Italy with the aim of visiting personally the Park to choose a site for their installation.

    The participating sculptors will be given enormous exposure to high profile visitors and will be exhibiting along with internationally noted artists.     31.07.01 Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder, Trondheim, Norway

    Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder (LKV) was established in 1993. The name means "artists' workshops in Lademoen" (Lademoen is the name of a part of Trondheim). LKV contains 34 artists' studios, 6 workshops and 2 guest studios. The studios and workshops are located in an old school building dating from the turn of the century. The five-storey building has a total floor area of 2 264m2. In addition to 34 private studios the facility also includes two project rooms at 90 and 55m2 respectively. Over the last 6 years we have built up a printmaking workshop, photographic dark room, metal and welding workshop, carpentry, a computer room and digital video editing suite. LKV is run as a foundation.

    LKV offers two guest studios (50m2, headroom 3,8m). The studios contain some basic tools (hammer, screwdrivers, stapler etc). The studio flats (30m2, fully furnished accommodation includes bedroom/living room, kitchen and bathroom) are located in a connected building. Both the studios and the flats are provided free of charge to artists from all over the world for a duration of 1 to 3 months. Longer residency can be negotiated in special circumstances. The rent for the studios is paid by the local authorities.

    Residents may be asked to give lectures about their work for other artists in Trondheim. LKV does not have a gallery, any exhibition must take place in the studio, in one of our project rooms or outside LKV's premises. Guest artists may use the workshops by paying a fee. The guest artists are selected once a year by a committee of 3 professional artists on the basis of applications with slides or other documentation of work.

    Trondheim is situated in the centre of Norway and lies on a fjord two hours from the open sea. The city is surrounded by a fine landscape of agricultural land, forests, hills and highlands with more mountainous regions to the south and east. Trondheim is the 3rd largest city in Norway. The city has throughout history been a cultural, spiritual, commercial and an educational centre including the University (NTNU) with institutes for film and drama, philosophy, anthropology, architecture, industrial design, construction technology and technical research. Trondheim has a rich cultural life with an art academy, music conservatory, symphony orchestra, concert hall, theatres, cinemas, clubs, bars and cafes.

    24.07.01 Contemporary dance residency project invites applications

    The Arts Council of Switzerland, Pro Helvetia, is currently investigating the possibilities of a dance residency project in Switzerland. The residency would serve the needs of South African choreographers in their artistic research. In addition, the project aims to favour cross-cultural encounters between the two countries.

    The Swiss partners of this project are involved in a contemporary and avant-garde art network. As such we have opted to work with contemporary or avant-garde dancers/choreographers from South Africa rather than with traditional or classical dance. This choice is not the result of classification of any kind, but rather assures the compatibility of both partners.

    Period and length of exchange
    Provisionally, a two-month stay is planned, between June and September 2002, in Lausanne, Switzerland.

    17.04.01 Monthly Photographic Critiques

    Many years ago a bunch of Cape Town photographers used to meet once a month at UCT to discuss their creative and/ or professional work. The evenings produced some heated debates and bruised egos but were ultimately very constructive. More recently Eric Miller initiated and hosted the iAfrika sessions and the Monday night Biocaf´┐Ż evenings. We have decided to resuscitate these useful crit evenings at the Centre for Photography. They take place on the third Monday of every month at the Centre for Photography (31-37 Orange Street, Gardens) at 7.30pm for an 8pm start.

    All photographers are invited to bring photographs, photo essays and/ or slides they would like to discuss, to these meetings. The works discussed will include ALL disciplines, not only documentary work. All full-time photography students are also welcome as are photographers from other parts of SA. We will use the Centre gallery space (where the Paul Weinberg show was) as there is good exhibition lighting and loads of parking.

    27.03.01 Festival Curator for the Cape Town Month of Photography

    The Cape Town Month of Photography Festival Committee is looking for a Festival Curator for the 2002 Month of Photography (MoP). The second Cape Town MoP is scheduled for March 2002. A core visual component of the Cape Town Heritage Festival, the Cape Town Month of Photography aims to promote southern African Photography through a range of photographic exhibitions in and around Cape Town during this month. We are looking for a curator, or a team of curators to:

    a) Create a curatorial framework and budget for the 2002 MoP, and
    b) Assume curatorial responsibilities for the (core) curated exhibitions which will take place in numerous venues around Cape Town in March 2002.

    The appointment is for a period of seven months from October 2001 to April 2002. The curatorial framework should address both the current socio-political realities in the region while also accommodating contemporary photographic practice. Applicants should take note that the Month of Photography showcases a wide range of photography, not limited to a particular genre such as documentary photography. Applicants for the curatorship should submit a curatorial framework and budget together with a timetable to the Cape Town Month of Photography Committee by April 30, 2001.

    Candidates will be expected to assist the Festival Committee to raise the required curatorial funding. Those with clear and achievable curatorial and fund-raising proposals will be given preference.

    NOTE: The 1999 Month of Photography consisted of 104 photographic exhibitions and events showcasing the work of 440 South African photographers. Entitled '100 XC' there were no specific curatorial directives. For the 2002 MoP there will be a core, curated festival component as well as an open category fringe festival.
