THIS MONTH:

Brett Murray, whose exhibition 'Hero' opens in Cape Town on November 28, made the news on Artthrob this month when he was named Standard Bank Young Artist for 2002. Fellow Capetonian Jane Alexander scooped the lucrative DaimlerChrysler award for sculpture, enabling her to produce a major international touring exhibition kicking off in Stuttgart next year. Also this month, wine estate Spier announced its commitment to incorporating visual art into its annual festival, starting with the launch of the Spier Outdoor Sculpture Biennial, to take place from January to March next year. In Johannesburg the Joubert Park Project continued to make an impact with walkabouts and performances every weekend by numerous local artists and visitors including Iceland's Anna Richardsdottir and Swedish artists Elin Wikström and Cecilia Parsberg. Top exhibitions included Willie Bester, in peak form at the Goodman; flawless video works by Minnette Vári at the Standard Bank Gallery; Canadian artist Mara Verna's residency show at the Bag Factory; and Paul Edmunds' installation at João Ferreira.

Next week: The December edition of Artthrob will be online on December 5.
