The Documenta artists unmasked

The names are out. The chosen have been listed. The fortunate artists - their reputations now considerably enhanced - selected by director Okwui Enwezor to participate in this year's Documenta have been announced. And what an interesting list it is - as much for the prominent omissions as for the inclusions, a significant number of them not widely known .
Four South Africans will be participating - Kendell Geers, David Goldblatt, William Kentridge (for the second time) and Santu Mofokeng. From the rest of Enwezor's home continent of Africa, there is Georges Adéagbo of Benin; photographer Zarina Bhimji, born in Uganda and now living in London; Frédéric Bruly Bouabré from the Cote d'Ivoire; Touhami Ennadre of Morocco; Meschac Gaba of Benin; Le Groupe Amos which was founded 1989 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo; Huit Facettes: Dynamique Artistique & Culturelle,founded 1996 in Dakar, Senegal. Current members: Abdoulaye N'Doye, El Hadji Sy, Fode Camara, Cheikh Niass, Jean Marie Bruce, Mor Lisa Ba and Amadou Kane Sy (Kan-Si); Bodys Isek Kingelez of Kinshasa; Olumuyiwa Olamide Osifuye of Lagos, Nigeria; sculptor Ouattara Watts, born in Abidjan and now living in New York; and Pascale Marthine Tayou and Jean-Marie Teno of Cameroon. Quite a formidable lineup.
This a truly international show, however, and as had been anticipated, the other 100 or so artists have been picked from all over the globe. Of the German photographers so prominent in the last few seasons, we have Candida Höfer rather than MOMA blockbuster Andreas Gursky or the Turner Prizewinner of 2000, Wolfgang Tillmans. And talking of the Turner prizewinners, of the last year's crop - Richard Billingham. Mike Nelson and winner light-switcher-on-and-offer Martin Creed, it is only film artist Isaac Julien, an Enwezor selection for the last Johannesburg Biennale, who has made it.
And nor has Enwezor ignored the older artists. Here is the mega sculptor Louise Bourgeois, often unkindly referred to in New York as the token old lady on every major show, and Leon Golub, somewhat out of the public eye with his large scale paintings of figures involved in charged political action until a show at the Brooklyn Museum of Art last summer raised his profile again.
Women artists make up more than a quarter of the total, and include such predictable - but always interesting - choices as Shirin Neshat, Doris Salcedo, Tania Bruguera, Renee Green, Lorna Simpson, Adrian Piper and Mona Hatoum.
