SANAVA at the Absa Gallery
Absa has come to the rescue of flailing national arts body, SANAVA (South African National Association for the Visual Arts) by hosting a sale of paintings, the proceeds of which will go directly to SANAVA.
Since the withdrawal of government funding two years ago, SANAVA has been struggling to make ends meet. The paintings on the exhibition were donated to SANAVA by grateful artists, who had been given the opportunity to live and learn at the SANAVA studios at the Cite des Arts in Paris - a developmental experience unaffordable to many.
The 85 works on sale include paintings by artists such as Philip Badenhorst, Joni Brenner, André Naudé, Walter Oltmann, Cecil Skotnes, Diane Victor and Diamond Bozas.
Closes: November 29

Where Does Outside Become Inside at Art on Paper
Giulio Tambellini shows large woodcuts, etchings, drawings and artist's books. Outside refers to explicit depictions of flesh, while inside nods to his exploration of anatomy and spirituality. Rigid shapes and flowing lines interact more in these works than in previous series'. His books are detailed and unique and showcase some of his photographic work, and his woodcuts are very large, but hand processed; this is a personal, exquisite, graphic exhibition. Tambellini has been an Atelier merit award winner and is in the collections of several SA museums and well as corporate collections.

Amos Letsoalo and Colbert Mashile at Gallery on the Square
Amos Letsoalo has been exhibiting nationally and internationally since 1997, this particular exhibition showcasing multi-media works on paper, titled Nga Ya Fsa. Commenting on the still life, Letsaolo has said: "I have always admired the still life paintings from the West, but I had my own perspective of what still life looks like to me as an African". He incorporates clay pots, bottles and cups, like those in African households, or used for traditional medicine. His images are abstracted but "try to create a realistic feeling".
Colbert Mashile is also a relatively "new" artist and his training, in Art and Heritage Studies, is ongoing. For years his work has dealt with circumcision. Circumcised at age ten, Mashile found the experience very traumatic. He explains his choice of subject matter: "I decided to heal myself by dealing with these experiences in my artworks whereby I try to use psychological images which I feel comfortable with in an attempt to replace horrific scenes, sights and sounds of the initiation ritual. I am not necessarily advocating the demise of the practice, but just to express my individual feeling which I believe would be shared by others who have endured the same." He will exhibit work that "depicts shadowy images deriving from the emotional experiences of initiation".

Insert Title Here at Carfax
This once-off collaborative exhibition between five young artists promises to showcase a variety of disciplines. Natalie Western's exhibition Unlikely Super-Heroes is a tongue-in-cheek, vibrantly colourful photographic and video exploration of the identities of herself and her friends, dealing with aspects of masquerade and fetishism. The World is Round, You Won't Fall Off from Kathleen Cameron, utilises high-tech, installation-based animation. She sets her soap opera story in central Johannesburg, while drawing from the style and flair of anime. In loco animus is the title of Pippa Stalker's installation, exploring notions of spirituality and site-specificity, or non-site-specificity, through her production of what she calls, "a portable holy space". Hanli Becker's collection of photographic works, Carrion Comfort, is a highly personal, cathartic exploration of binary tension and notions of indeterminacy. In Billy and the Super-Surreal, Richard Baldwin's canvases demonstrate the tension between his interest in narrative, and his obsession with the act of painting and the painterly surface.
Snacks will be served and there will be an open bar.
Opens and closes: November 7
Carfax, 39 Pimm Street, Newtown
