Art critics conference prevented by coup

The International Association of Art Critics 2003 conference, planned to take place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast in late October has been cancelled following an uprising which began on September 19 in that country. "After discussing the matter with all our partners: AICA/Cote d'Ivoire, DAK'ART Biennale in Senegal and AICA (International Association of Art Critics) headquarters in Paris, with concern, we decided that one cannot take the risk to bring foreigners to this sadly troubled country", said Florence Alexis, director of AFAA, Programme Afrique en creations, in an email this week.

The coup has led to the cancellation of other art-related events as well. A seminar planned as a follow up discussion to take place in Dakar in November will not now take place. Says Alexis. "Our Programm Afrique en creations has cancelled all its projects and partnerships in Ivory Coast until better news comes".
