Virginia MacKenny describes Garth Walker as Durban's internationally renowned African culture and design guru. Garth simply prefers the self-effacing title, "official supplier of design to the rainbow nation". Best known for his shenanigans as editor of i-jusi magazine, an irreverent print publication vaguely positioned somewhere between the art and design divide, Garth is founder of Orange Juice Design. He has also dabbled with art. He recently curated 'Five', a show in five venues held over five hours to celebrate Red Eye's fifth birthday recently. This website offers an oblique point of entry into the world according to Garth.

This may be website of the month, but one would have to ask, which month? Or year? The website of the national funding agency for culture is hopelessly outdated. (and dead boring in design). News of which projects received funding stopped in November 2001. Under News, press releases are undated ,and the list of new board members, the subject of much recent controversy, is not being divulged to the public through the website. All the old names are still in place. One irony is that the few links to national cultural websites includes Artslink, a vital resource which the NAC has steadfastly refused to fund. The only current information seems to be the next date for accepting funding applications: September 12, 2003.

Their website is very simple, and is primarily aimed at canvassing supporters for the idea of a regional event broadcasting radio station. The brainchild of John Turest Swartz, this University of Cape Town based website has the backing of the Ford Foundation in trying to archive the artists and musicians of seven countries across Africa - South Africa, Mali, Ghana, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Mozambique. An extremely worthy enterprise, but one which needs some serious attention to the section on artists to be relevant. Apart from an essay on Sam Nhlengethwa by David Koloane, all of the information on South African artists seems to have been taken verbatim and scanned either from Art in South Africa: the Future Present (Sue Williamson and Ashraf Jamal, 1996) (a random selection of artists) or the Ibis Centre !Xoe site spec ific project catalogue. Useful if you don't have those publications. A long list of other artists from other countries, particularly Zimbabwe, appears.
