Artists in the Press

A brief review of recent print media reveals the prominent profile of many South African artists, both locally and abroad. Starting with the latter, the UK-based Contemporary magazine features two artist profiles. William Kentridge's animated work is the subject of Sarah Forbey's piece 'Ghosting Shadows', while David Goldblatt receives considerable more attention in an interview with Morgan Falconer.

"I'm working on a series of landscapes of rural South Africa," Goldblatt reveals, "and I'm finding it more difficult because there is a tendency for the colour to glorify everything." Sue Williamson, the magazine's Cape Town correspondent editor focuses timely international attention on Robert Hodgins, reviewing his recent solo show at Joáo Ferreira.

Locally, Kendell Geers faced some challenging (some have commented cynical) questions from Matthew Krouse and Shaun de Waal in an article titled 'Shifting Geers' (M&G, May 23 - 29). In response to a question about the problems regarding the transfer of meanings locally and internationally, Geers revealingly stated: "It is my intention to work very precisely within a local framework as an attempt to resist international languages and structures."

Elsewhere, in The Sunday Independent (June 1), Lloyd Pollak wrote a glowing review of Michael Stevenson's inaugural show 'Contact Zones' (June 1). Doubtlessly enthralled by what he had seen, Pollak remarks that the show offers a dizzying labyrinth of echo and reflection that dismantles stereotypes about European and African traditions "to reveal the rich compost of symbiosis on which our art so heartily thrives."

Mike van Graan offers a useful insight into the Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA), as well as the ensuing debates, in the M&G, June 13 - 19.
