Aryan Kaganof
Nicola's First Orgasm, 2003

Aryan Kaganof's international profile

Aryan Kaganof (formerly Ian Kerkhof) recently had two of his films shown at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam (www.filmfestrotterdam.com/en/film/1917.html). Made when Kaganof still went by the name of Ian Kerkhof The Dead Man 2: Return of the Dead Man (1994) stars the late Jaap Hoogstra, while the more recent Nicola's First Orgasm (2003), seen in Durban at Kaganof's exhibition at the NSA, is a collaborative piece with Kaganof's partner Nicola Deane. Incidentally, for those of you who can read French there is an interview with Deane on her Home Economics performance in Paris, also first performed in Durban. Go to: www.arlacom.com/news/deane.htm

Kaganof's award winning film Western 4.33 has also just been officially selected for the 2004 Berlin Film Festival. The film engages the history of colonial oppression in Namibia in a haunting exposeďż˝. See Listings.

For anyone keen to catch Kaganof's films you can see some of them, and some of those of his collaborators, being screened at Trance Sky (formerly Bassline), #7 7th Street, in Melville, every Wednesday at 7pm. Films include Gare Itshebeng by Aryan Kaganof and Lefifi Tladi and I Promised You Marvels by Catherine Henegan and Jimmy Rage.
