'Diptych': Members of the NSA on exhibition

Each year the NSA caters for its members directly by providing them an opportunity to show their work in the gallery. Given the diversity of talents and interests that the membership base has, the gallery creates some constraints in order to provide some cohesion to the exercise. This year the 'theme' does not impose on subject but on format.

'Diptych' asks for two panels, each not exceeding a 15cm x 20cm size, and prompts artists to engage with juxtaposition as a key component of meaning in the work. This annual event attracts considerable interest every year, and gives exposure to the positive contribution members make towards the arts in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

The Joan Emmanuel floating trophy, made available by the Emanuel family will be awarded to the best work on show and in addition three cash prizes of R1 000 each will be awarded by a panel of experts for the best entries submitted.

Supporting the Members Exhibition, the Main Gallery will host specially invited members for an exhibition intended as a celebration of prominent members of the NSA who have not shown recently. Invited artists include Karen Bradtke, Pascale Chandler, Hillary Graham, Linda Jones, Grace Kotze, Marianne Meijer, Bernice Stott and Andrew Verster.

Opens: January 27, at 6pm
Closes: February 14

Coral Spencer's 'Skin' at artSPACE durban

Coral Spencer's latest exhibition of "oil drawings" is entitled 'Skin'. Fresh from having exhibited at the Elizabeth Gordon Gallery three months ago, Spencer here shows a whole new body of work based on her technique of drawing with turps in oil. Focusing her attention on the male nude, the surface generated by the technique adds a particularly sensuous tactility to the work. Spencer is a resident artist in the studios of artSPACE Durban.

Also showing at the same time is Jolan Baker. Currently a DIT Fine Art student, Baker is already known for her technically accomplished chalk drawings on the advertising boards at various restaurants around Durban, such as the Grillroom. Baker now presents works from her fine art portfolio.

Opens: January 21, at 6:30pm
Closes: January 29
