Finalists announced for 10th annual ACT awards
by Kresta Tyler Johnson

The Arts and Culture Trust (ACT) will celebrate their first decade with the announcement of the winners of the 2004 Arts and Culture Trust Awards. Hosted by Nedbank, the awards will be presented on November 4 at the Nedcor Building in Sandown and the competition is stiff.

A variety of artistic fields are represented and individuals and companies range from established programmes and corporates to the more informal, community development projects. This is further testament to the growth of the arts in the formal, cultural landscape of South Africa.

An independent panel of judges, Vanessa Cooke, director of the Market Theatre Laboratory; Ryan Fortune, Arts Editor of THISDAY; Martin Koboekae, writer, director and artistic director of Dramatists Against Crime; and Thangana Krila Gobingca George Mxadana, music director and conductor of the Imilonji KaNtu Choral Society, were tasked with the unenviable job of selecting the finalists.

A complete list of finalists can be viewed at www.act.co.za . ACT focuses on five areas of funding development; job creation; creative skills; management skills; cultural diversity; awareness and understanding (the promotion of local cultures and cultural exchange); and cultural tourism and marketing.
