'Keep it to yourself': Dineo Seshee Bopape at the NSA

Young arts graduate Dineo Seshee Bopape is an artist who is interested in the collection of material and the potential of objects to invoke strong emotional reactions. 'I am intrigued by the mundane secretive aspects of people's lives, 'un-important' rituals, the ecstasy and discomforts felt and experienced in seemingly 'private' and 'public' spaces- which is made real and embodied in the material world', says Bopape. 'Keep it to yourself' is a maze of obsessiveness, an installation of found objects which act as carriers of information and experience.

The resulting considered, abject messiness provides the viewer entry into the netherworld of the unsaid and unspoken. Secrets, white lies and elements of psychosexual ambivalence all play a part.

Opens: Tuesday, June 21 at 6.00 p.m.
Closes: July 10.

Hillary Graham shows paintings, drawings and prints

The NSA Gallery presents an overview of recent, and not so recent works by renowned artist Hilary Graham, with the quirky title of 'a Kindov a pawtrayt ov a Kindov a guy' When asked for additional information on his work and life, notes were received by the NSA Gallery from an alter ego speaking for Graham describing a series of exotic and metaphysical adventures.

What is known for sure is that Graham will relocate to the Eastern Cape from Durban later in the year. Prior to living in Durban, Graham was the head of department at the Fine Art Department, Fort Hare University. His work is represented in numerous public and private collections in South Africa and abroad.

The artist will give a talk entitled The sinking of the Mendi on Wednesday 29 June 2005 at 6:30pm

Opens: Tuesday, June 21 at 6.00 pm
Closes: July 3

'On the bright side': Mollie Stiebel

The NSA Gallery proudly presents the first solo exhibition by Mollie Stiebel, aged 84. The exhibition is a remarkable achievement by Stiebel, who taught in Durban schools until her retirement in the 1970s. During these quieter years she continued making art, and concentrated on her passion for painting. Since 1997 she has participated in Pascale Chandler's studio, where she developed a unique painterly language.

Stiebel presents a new body of work, a series of still life paintings that portray an assortment of much loved objects in her home. Having worked with children during her career as a teacher, she also takes inspiration from children's work, and some of her granddaughters pre-primary paintings are referenced in the paintings.

Stiebel's works show a sensitive application of colour and a confident use of loose brushstrokes.

Opens: Tuesday, June 21 at 6.00 pm
Closes: July 10

Langa Magwa, Zama Dunywa and Lindelani Ngwenya at artSpace

'Containers' is an exhibition featuring prominent KwaZulu Natal artists Langa Magwa, Zama Dunywa, and Lindelani Ngwenya who specialise in sculpture, painting and mixed media. Exhibiting together for the second time, Langa, Zama, and Lindelani will be exhibiting mostly sculptural works of mixed media that include wire, metal, wood, rubber, aluminium and copper. Copper dominates the show with a range of two-dimensional works on paper and canvas. The theme of the exhibition is containers. The artists aim to fully explore the idea of a container (containing and being contained) within their cultural context as artists, human beings, and individuals.

July 4 to July 16, 2005

'Phantasmagoria' at artSpace

Vega is a brand communication school, in Durban, and 'Phantasmagoria' is an exhibition by the lecturing staff of Vega. Work presented engages ideas of mythologies and storytelling. It is the creation of stories that enables us to mould our identities and give shape and expression to the world of things that surrounds us.

Opens: July 18 at 6:30pm
Closes: August 6

'Innovative Threads' 10th Anniversary exhibition

This textile art exhibition which opened first in Cape Town, appears in Durban at artSpace before proceeding to France. This is not a run-of-the-mill exhibition of quilts, but an investigation by a number of artists into making innovative work with fabric and other materials.

In addition to the textile art exhibition, Innovative Threads 2005 provides a platform for empowerment groups to exhibit and sell their products.

Opens: 6pm, June 19
Closes: July 2
