Trasi Henen at David Krut Arts Resource
by Robyn Sassen
Like Colbert Mashile before her, young artist Trasi Henen has won support from art consultant David Krut. Lack of marketing strategies and access to audience hamper the progress of many young artists, so the Wits Fine Art graduate was fortunate to have Krut allow her access to the print workshop and master printmakers, Jill Ross and Tim Foulds, not least of all to host the subsequent exhibition. This body of etchings, monographs and paintings, Henen's début solo exhibition entitled 'Passer Bye', manifested competent draftsmanship and an exuberant choice of colour.
Henen's theme on this show is the urban explorer, and her work reflects a passion for the inner city Johannesburg. References to taxis and the shells of cars are frequent, and metaphors of exploration, deep sea divers and astronauts also populate her work.
Henen draws on her awareness of middle class urbanity in her work. Born and raised in Kempton Park, she matriculated at Queens High School in Kensington, and mentions her Jewish identity as a nebulous point of association to these ostensibly non-Jewish suburban roots.
