The African Art Centre relocates
by Francesca Verga
After occupying the same premises for nine years in the heart of the city centre, in the Tourist Junction, the African Art Centre (AAC) is set to relocate to a new address in Florida Road.
The AAC, as a non-profit organisation, has been in existence for 45 years. The centre serves to promote the works of artists and projects within KwaZulu-Natal and other provinces in the country. Their mission to help both young and established artists with training, development, exhibitions, publicity and to discover and encourage and nurture works of creativity and originality will continue. The AAC strives to document trends in African art and craft, keeping in mind the preservation of South African cultural heritage.
The new premises, at 94 Florida Road will be occupied on October 23, 2006. The building has been re-designed by architects Janina Masojada and Andrew Makin of Design Workshop Architects.
The new gallery space will feature an exhibition showcasing the works of sister basket weavers Angeline and Nomusa Masuko. Angeline Masuko was awarded first prize on the FNB Vita Craft exhibition held at the KZNSA in July. The new shop space will be officially opened by the Chairman of the AAC, Dr Teddy Pillay.
