Goodman Gallery Award for 2006
The Goodman Gallery Award for 2006 was awarded to Sue Williamson, artist, writer and founding editor of www.artthrob.co.za. This award seeks to honour an established artist who has won professional distinction as well as contributing in a significant way to the South African art world. This is the second year the gallery has awarded this prestigious and substantial prize, worth R100 000. Cecil Skotnes was the 2005 recipient.
Williamson, who is based in Cape Town, is well known on the international art circuit, with work in museum collections such as the MoMA in New York, the Museum of African Art in Washington and the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art. She is the writer of Resistance Art in South Africa (1st edition 1989, 2nd edition 2004) and the co-author of Art in South Africa: the future present (1996).
The Goodman Gallery Award was announced at a lively dinner in a Johannesburg restaurant this month, a joyful occasion which also celebrated the 70th birthday of founder and gallerist Linda Givon, paid tribute to by Neil Dundas, and the 40th birthday of the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg.
