'Very Real Time 2' starts in Cape Town

Six artists have been selected to partake in the 'Very Real Time 2' residency and project series in Cape Town this month. This follows a discussion series held at the Drill Hall in Johannesburg and extended through online forums earlier this year, upon which the selection of artists was based. Capetonian Ed Young joins five other international artists: Sung Hwan Kim (South Korea/Netherlands), Jimmy Robert (France), Jeannine Diego Medina and Conrado Tostado (Mexico) and Mieke van der Voort (Netherlands).

Gregg Smith, the project organiser, said in a statement that 'Very Real Time' artists would take their initial personal encounters and experiences in the city as a starting point for examining 'the psychological and emotional dimensions of local daily life'. The project also examines the role of the artist in a socially engaged capacity, questioning where a healthy balance between the artist's subjectivity and their social environment may be located . The projects will largely comprise performances, presentations, interventions and investigations.

'Very Real Time 2' kicks off on October 2 with an exhibition of work by Sung Hwan Kim at the Michaelis Gallery on Hiddingh campus. The artist will also give a lunchtime lecture presentation at the Michaelis Lecture Theatre at 1pm on Thursday October 11.
