Umcebo Trust
by Carol Brown
As usual, the resourceful and talented team at Umcebo Trust (now working from uShaka in Durban) is going places. One of their spectacular necklace/sculpture pieces was purchased by a collector in Switzerland who has added it to her travelling show of jewellery. A prominent KwaZulu-Natal architect commissioned a chandelier made from waste materials, and a luxury resort in Mozambique is also a proud owner of their special chandeliers. They have joined forces with a design and training course for unemployed people in Swaziland and have just launched their new look website www.umcebotrust.co.za
This group, which originally worked at Ningizuma School with mentally challenged learners, now operates as an independent organisation with the same ethos as before, providing employment and creative stimulation to many people. Their leader Robin Opperman constantly comes up with amazing new ideas and their products are achieving cult status.
