Greatmore Studios calls for artists to contribute to a celebratory raffle event
2008 finds Greatmore Studios celebrating its 10th anniversary. To celebrate and reflect on the extraordinary impact that the studios and Thupelo Cape Town have had in the community, in Southern Africa and abroad, the board of Greatmore Studios has proposed to host a raffle draw. For the raffle to be realised, artists who have been identified for their important contributions to contemporary art making in South Africa have been asked to donate a work on paper, less than 100 x 70cm in size, in any medium: print, painting, photography or digital. Tickets will be sold for R1600 or 100 pounds each, with the hope that each ticket holder will receive a work of art. Greatmore Studios has already received commitments from many artists, including several internationally known SA artists.
Artists who have not yet received a special invite but feel affiliated with the studios and its various projects, are asked to kindly share in this occasion by submitting artwork for this cause. The funds raised from this initiative will go towards an ongoing development project at the studios. Artwork must be submitted for inclusion in this special raffle by July 31, 2008 and artists are invited to join us at the studios on November 14, 2008 for a day long celebration and raffle draw. Artists working in Johannesburg are encouraged to drop off work at the Bag Factory (www.bagfactoryart.org.za) in Newtown Johannesburg (10 Mahlatini Street, Fordsburg) with either James French or Phillip, while artists working in the Eastern Cape are encouraged to drop off work at the Ann Bryant Gallery at 9 St Marks Road, Belgravia, East London.

Carrol Boyes Announces Theme for METAL 2008
Ever searching for fresh new design talent across South Africa, Carrol Boyes Functional Art (CBFA) has announced the theme for the METAL 2008 New Designer Search: 'Frame'.
METAL is the fourth annual New Designer Search designed to discover and nurture new product design talent in South Africa. METAL invites aspirant designers to submit a prototype based on a specific theme.
Organisers of this year's initiative invite aspirant product designers to create a prototype of a frame - a structure that can contain or border any article of beauty such as a mirror, an artwork, an image, an item of jewellery or the like. Carrol Boyes, arguably one of South Africa's most commercially successful product designers, explains her choice of theme: 'A frame may hold a special memory, reflect a shared moment or simply contain a gift from someone close. I would like to encourage entrants to be inspired by these moments whilst designing and creating their prototypes so that these may reflect their uniqueness. I hope the theme inspires designers to create something completely original in form.'

Specs journal invites submissions
Specs is a journal of contemporary culture and arts at Rollins College that aims to create sympathetic interfaces between artistic and critical practices. The editors invite submissions of creative and/or critical work for the annual Fall 2008 print and web issue. We seek works of fiction, non-fiction, cultural criticism, artwork, poetry, and pieces that blur genre boundaries.
The editorial board consists of writers and academics from various fields. The editors are excited by specialty, an excess of detail, fragments, narratives, meta-narratives, and more.
The deadline for poetry, creative non-fiction, fiction, and art is March 3, 2008. We accept simultaneous submissions of creative work, as long as we receive prompt notice of acceptance elsewhere. Please limit prose submissions to under 6000 words and poetry submissions to 10-12 pages.
Email submissions as word attachments to editors@specsjournal.org
Remember to include a brief cover letter indicating whether you wish to be considered for the print edition, the web edition, or both. Please be advised that colour artwork with heavy graphics will only be considered for the web edition. Artwork for the print edition is limited to black on white work (4 x 7 dimensions).
Please also indicate the type/genre of submission in the subject heading (Poetry, Fiction, etc.).
We are also seeking art, fiction, poetry, and critical work that limits itself to one-page pieces for ONE/OFF, a special interactive section of Specs. In this section, we hope to force interactions between the print and web edition.
