Shortlist for DaimlerChrysler arts award announced

As sought after as their cars, the DaimlerChrysler Arts Award has become one of the more lucrative accolades in the South African arts sector. Tailored each year to suit the chosen discipline, this year's award focuses on creative photography. The nominees, crossing the fields between fine arts, advertising and social documentary, are:
Angela Buckland
Stephen Hobbs
Jakob Doman
Brent Meistre
Zwelethu Mthethwa
Jo Ractliffe
Guy Tillum
Andrew Tshabangu
In addition to the profile that comes with being nominated, the overall winner receives a cash prize of R30 000, the production of a glossy, full colour catalogue of works and a solo exhibition in 2004, for showcasing both locally and internationally.
The panel responsible for nominating and selecting the artists comprised David Brodie, Heidi Erdmann, Kathryn Smith, George Hallett, Thinus Mathee, Virginia MacKenny, Tim Hopwood and Cedric Nunn. Smith, Brodie and Nunn will also act as advisors to an independent jury panel charged with selecting the overall winner.
The winner will be announced on November 13 at Museum Africa.
