Red Cross Children's Hospital Trust Gala Banquet and Art Auction

A gala banquet and art auction takes place in Cape Town next month to raise funds for the upgrade of the Red Cross Children's Hospital Trauma Unit Appeal.

As a state hospital, the Red Cross Children's Hospital relies on government funding. The Children's Hospital Trust, the fundraising arm of the hospital, is continually looking at ways to respond to the shrinking operational budgets and staff cuts faced by healthcare institutions. There is a critical need to improve inpatient facilities and purchase essential, life-saving equipment in order to maintain the highest standards of medical care possible.

The relocation and upgrading of the trauma unit, which has remained unchanged since it was built in 1984, is a R16 million project. To this end, the annual Maersk Sealand and Children's Hospital Trust Gala Banquet, taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, will feature fine dining, entertainment and an art auction. So far, a number of art galleries and artists have provided work for auction.

Artists include William Kentridge, Stephen Hobbs, Sam Nhlengthwa, Norman Catherine, Deborah Bell, Velaphi Zimba, Pippa Skotnes, Paul du Toit, Beezy Bailey and Robert Hodgins. The Goodman Gallery has forwarded work by Cecil Skotnes, Kim Lieberman, Walter Battiss and Roger Ballen amongst others.

The auction takes place on December 2.
