Scholarship opportunities
Are you considering brushing up on your formal art writing skills? Reading for a new degree? And is the enthusiasm there, but the funding not? Unisa's Art History and Visual Arts Department is currently promoting its Robin Aldwinckle Scholarship, which offers a number of substantial opportunities for assistance with advanced degrees in this discipline for next year.
Aldwinckle was an extremely well loved colleague and friend in the department, where she was employed as a photographer. Having studied at the Pretoria Technikon, she was also a keen sculptor, always fascinated and impassioned by the process of making art. In 1981, she bought a panhandle property, in Waterkloof, a suburb of Pretoria, and was keen to refurbish the place, involving her colleagues in establishing a mini-collective of Unisa-based academics. Tragically she never had the opportunity of living in her new home as she was killed in a motor accident in 1984.
Her mother died soon after the tragic accident, whereupon her father decided to do something with the generous Unisa compensation granted to the family on the occasion of this tragic loss, and he established the Robin Aldwinckle Scholarship Fund. Over the years, this has assisted numerous able students to excel in the discipline, with a considerably lightened fee responsibility.
Eligibility for the Scholarship is contingent on one's registration for the MA in Art History, Masters in Visual Arts or the D Litt et Phil in Art History. A student who already holds another scholarship administered by Unisa is not eligible to apply. The awarding of the Aldwinckle scholarship lies at the discretion of the Postgraduate Degrees Committee of Art History and Visual Arts of the Department of Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology. The awarding of these scholarships is based on academic merit, as well as the quality and viability of a research proposal.
Closing date for applications is December 15, 2004. Applicants will be informed of the outcome by February 28, 2005. Payment is made in two installments and is dependant on satisfactory progress being made, and upon the recommendation of the Postgraduate Degrees Committee of the Department. The first installment is payable six months after the acceptance of the student's registration, and the final payment is made once approval has been granted for the submission of the dissertation or thesis for examination.
