Ten Years of Democracy - Is it providing film with a future?

August saw the screening of the 'Awakening Film Festival', which offers viewers the opportunity to see classic and contemporary South African films in a variety of formats from documentary to features and shorts. This year there were five premieres as well.

Cultural activists gather on August 25 for the dialogue session that will explore and assess if the past 10 years have provided South African film with the potential for growth or the possibility of death.

A panel of three speakers, including Mike van Graan, General Secretary of the Performing Arts and Culture Trust (ACT); Professor Andries Oliphant, Chairperson of ACT and Steven Sack, Director of Arts, Culture and Heritage Services for Johannesburg, will lead the discussion.

Judging from past, tempers may flare and engagement of the issues may become fierce but the end results will be productive. The outcomes from the session will then be sent through to policy makers with the hope of influencing future legislation and decisions around competition and improved policy support.
