Subject Red Eye

I have recently read an erroneous entry in the 10 years 100 artists book and would like to address the matter. After talking with the editor of the chronology in the book (Sophie Perryer) it seems that the reference that Suzy Bell began Red Eye Art came from information supplied by ArtThrob. This is in fact not true. Red Eye was started by the Durban Art Gallery and can be attributed to no single person. Red Eye developed out of efforts by myself (at the time a volunteer at the gallery) and Carol Brown. Bell was invited to join the committee due to her media network and skills and her interest in art and popular culture. While she performed a stirling job in raising the awareness of Red Eye and the Durban Art Gallery there are many people who contributed to the ongoing success of Red Eye.

I understand that Bell may also be claiming to have started Red Eye. I wonder how this could be addressed? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

We can't find the reference to which you have been referred. If you can supply us with its location, we can correct it. As for Bell's personal claims, I can only suggest you take this up with her personally.

Subject Reviews

I recently read two reviews that troubled me: the hatchet job on Kathryn Smith bordered on being malicious, and the review of Trasi Henen's show struck me as simply bad. Very little of interest was said and parts were simply copied from the David Krut website. Surely there are people with more constructive views out there that engage more with the artists and their work?
