WEBSITE OF THE MONTH

by Andrew Lamprecht

   Clarke's Bookshop
www.clarkesbooks.co.za

Established in 1956, Clarke's Bookshop on Cape Town's Long Street is considered nothing short of a national treasure by a whole host of scholars, writers, artists and bibliophiles who hold it in an affectionate reverence rarely seen towards a commercial establishment. Rumour has it that novelist Graham Greene would stop off for a quick browse even before checking into his hotel when he visited the city. This is a local bookshop with a truly international reputation. Owner Henrietta Dax has even been featured in an article in the New York Times documenting her adventures on the continent of Africa in search of rare, unusual and hard-to-come-by books.

Clarke's has always made a speciality of art books, right back to the days of founder Anthony Clarke, who was famed for having, as an officer during the Second World War, halted the bombing of an Italian town because he remembered that it was the home to spectacular art treasures.

With the launch of their dedicated art website Clarke's now allows virtual visitors from around the world to search through its unmatched holdings of southern African art publications. The shop makes a point of stocking all new books on South African art and will search for something in the unlikely event that they do not have it. In addition, older publications, some very rare, are offered through traditional catalogues that can be downloaded and viewed from the site.

Visitors can browse by means of drop-down subject headings or search by keyword. If you really have a lot of time you can also go through the entire stock alphabetically. Illustrations of covers are always on view and there are short descriptions where necessary.

This is not a secure site and after ordering you will have to fax or phone in your credit card number which, in this day and age, is probably the safest option of all. Payment by other means is also possible.

The site is essential to bookmark if you are interested in South African art. Dax and her staff scour the country and continent looking for art publications and if you thought that Amazon or Kalahari was the be-all and end-all for acquiring art books, the briefest comparison will show just how comprehensive Clarke's stock is.
