Sasol Wax Art Award calls for nominations

SASOL, the world's largest producers of wax, has announced the launch of the Sasol Wax Art Award 2006. This award is aimed at established, professional artists and seeks to reward innovation and excellence in the visual arts.

Five finalists each receive an honorarium of R20 000 towards the production of works and one final award brings the prize money to R130 000 Finalists will be selected following nominations and judging process, based on the artists' career profiles and achievements.

Nominations are open from December 4, 2005 - February 20, 2006. You may nominate yourself or a colleague who is eligible, but artists may not be nominated without their knowledge and approval.

Nominees must:
- be practicing artists, permanently resident in the Republic of South Africa.
- have participated in at least four group exhibitions.
- have mounted at least two solo shows.

In addition to the above, the following will be considered:
- Academic and/or community profile.
- Participation in residencies.
- Publications.
- Qualifications forma, informal and/or community-based.
- Affiliation to industry organisations and bodies.
- Outreach and industry activity.

Rijksakademie Research Residency call for entries

The Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam is a working and meeting place for young professional artists from all over the world. Fifty resident artists work for one or two years on research, projects and production. Such a work period is most valuable after three to five years of professional experience, after (the last) art education.

Concentration on the work, reflection and discussion are central to the residency. Residents are supported on an artistic, technical and theoretical level by internationally recognised artists, art critics, curators and other advisors. Technical specialists advise on research, experiment and production and a broad ange of technical facilities are at hand.

Resident artists pursue all major contemporary visual art disciplines: painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, video, film, sound and new media, and can link up with other disciplines such as architecture, theatre, music, dance, literature and film.

The Rijksakademie has 50 studios. Each year approximately 25 artists are selected for a residency. Artists can apply for the Residency 2007 (January - December) through the online application form.

Call for expression of interest to develop an art gallery on the Spier Estate

The Management board of SPIER HOLDINGS (PTY) LTD extends this call for expression of interest to individuals or parties to develop an Art Gallery on the Spier Estate. The Art Gallery will exhibit and provide for sale of the work of contemporary and emerging South African and African artists.

Originally founded in 1692, the Spier Estate was purchased by the Enthoven family in 1993 when an aggressive process of restoration and expansion began. Spier currently operates two core businesses - Spier Leisure, which comprises hotels, property, restaurants, conference facilities, and farms; and Winecorp Holdings, which is comprised of vineyards, winemaking and bottling facilities. In addition, Spier also has interests in various other businesses including hotels, farms, nurseries and the treatment and production of organic waste. One of Spier's core values, which infuse all its businesses, is the preservation, promotion and development of the arts.

From Spier's onset it has become a haven for the arts. For the last eight years the Spier Arts Trust has produced an annual four-month festival of the performing arts. The 1100 seat arena at Spier has staged a diverse offering of dance, theatre and music. In addition, Spier has given birth to the internationally acclaimed Dimpho Di Copane, a music theatre company, supports artistic development programmes such as the Spier Young Voices project, and exhibits a range of South African and Pan-African visual art on the Spier Estate.

To further its interests in promoting and developing the arts, Spier is planning the launch of a permanent art gallery on the Estate.

1. The opportunity
- Spier will provide the space and the infrastructure at a rate far below market. The final rate charged will be determined in collaboration with the partner chosen.
- The space will be in the Old Wine Cellar, a structure of historic significance - approximately 150 square meters.
- It is centrally located on the Estate and on the footpath of significant passing trade.
- The successful partner in this venture will benefit from the 500 000 visitors to the Estate per annum.
- The successful partner should be in a position to commence business as soon as possible

2. The successful partner will:
- Share a similar value set to Spier.
- Demonstrate appropriate previous experience and knowledge in this cultural industry.
- Share a similar vision for the gallery to Spier's Arts and Cultural brand imperatives.
- Present to Spier a 12 month implementation and business plan for the utilisation of the space.
- The implementation plan should outline:
-- The curatorial vision for the gallery
-- A 12 month programme of rotating exhibitions and events which cites possible artists and work.
- The business plan should demonstrate financial sustainability.

Call for expression of interest to develop art installations in hotel rooms on the Spier Estate

The Management board of SPIER HOLDINGS (PTY) LTD extends this call for expression of interest to individual artists or designers to develop Art Installations in selected hotel rooms at the Village Hotel at Spier.

1. The opportunity
Spier will provide:
- The hotel room.
- A materials budget of R20 000 per room.
- A honorarium of R10 000 per artist.
- Accommodation during the installation.
- Any works of art or copies of parts of the installation in the room can be put up for sale by the artist. Any proceeds accrued from the sale of products or work will be retained by the artist. All items sold from the rooms, will however, need to be replaced by another piece of the artist's work.
- Spier will own the concept drawings and design and any products, which are produced from the materials budget of R20 000.

2. The individual artist or designer who is chosen will:
- Provide a proposal, which details the artistic concept.
- A budget which details the cost of materials to a limit of R20 000

3 The proposed process:
- Approximately 5 artists will be selected.
- The Group of five will be hosted at the Spier Hotel for a weekend. Each artist will have the opportunity to inhabit the room in which she/he will work and get a feel for the estate and its visitors. Artists will also be briefed on design, issues of safety and functionality.
- After the weekend, artists will be given 7 days to develop their artistic concepts and designs.

A Show for Bethlehem: call for submissions

After presenting his global networking project [R][R][F]2005--->XP - http://rrf2005.newmediafest.org in 2005 in Bethlehem/Palestine as an interactive media exhibition, Agricola de Cologne, media artist and director of [NewMediaArtprojectNetwork]:||cologne - www.nmartproject.net is invited to curate in 2006 another exhibition in Bethlehem at CAVE Gallery/Bethlehem International Center to be inaugurated in July 2006, this time focused on the classical theme of 'selfportrait', but executed in New Media.

Through its relevance in three world religions, Bethlehem was during more than 2000 years a symbol for peace also beyond, but since some time Bethlehem and the entire Holy Land on the Westbank is vanishing behind a huge wall as the result of a conflict in Middle East which is threatening world peace since many years.

Just by being presented in Bethlehem 'Selfportrait - a show for Bethlehem' has also a political dimension in different concern. It does not bring only the message of solidarity, but also the idea of a free and independent culture without borders, in this way the show becomes an action for supporting the efforts for peace in Middle East. Each artist involved becomes a messenger of peace.

This call for proposals is addressed to all artists working with digital/electronic media, for submitting one single 'selfportrait' for exhibition purposes as digital print, digital video, multi-media works based on CD-ROM and Internet, and soundart, focused on how they see themselves and the environment they are living in. Due to the limits of exhibition space, only a selection of submissions can be included.

In order to spread the message of solidarity and peace, it is planned to present this show also at other places around the globe.

Blacksmiths' Workshops at The Blacksmith Forge, Cape Town

Artist Blacksmithing 1 year course

Course content: Basic Blacksmithing. You will be taught and will make, use and equip yourself with all the hand tools and skills needed to work as an artist blacksmith. Design and business skills electives will also be offered. The course will be in line with the standards developed by the Appalachian Blacksmiths' Association, an affiliate of the Artist Blacksmith Association of North America (ABANA). The course will be overseen and some modules taught by Conrad Hicks.

Includes: materials, equipment, safety gear and textbooks.
What to bring: toolbox, strong clothing (no synthetic fabrics), good attitude, be prepared for hard work. You should be healthy and fit, and people with physical disadvantages should consult first. The course is open to people of ages16 onwards. We can accommodate all levels of experience.

At the end of the first year students will have an option to continue into a second year of more advanced training. Space is limited - please book early.

Two Week Toolmaking Course

Brent Bailey is a Master Artist Blacksmith and toolmaker based in California. He is very experienced and has taught toolmaking all over the US and Peru. Brent has been given a grant by the ABANA to come to the Blacksmiths' Workshop for two months. He will run a two week toolmaking course while he is here.

Part time course in Creative Digital Audio Techniques

An adventuresome exploration of digital sound creation for non-musicians. The course will utilise free software including Audacity, a Mac/PC based application (www.audacity.sourceforge.net/). This course is relevant to anyone wishing to utilise sound in presentations, web-based projects, installations, and film/animation. Or just keen to find a more creative approach to digital sound production.

The course will be run by electro-acoustic performer and teacher Brendon Bussy.

Brendon Bussy is an electronic producer and acoustic performer. He creates sound pieces combining acoustic instruments and software, in particular the mandolin (which he plays) and Audiomulch, an experimental realtime audio processing tool. He has performed as part of electro - acoustic duo CORRECTIVE (with Dean Henning) and with Dutch performance art group Dogtroep. In 2003, Brendon released Diesel Geiger (Open Records), and recently performed at Unyazi, an international electronic festival in Johannesburg. He also performs as part of acoustic duo Abel Steen. Bussy teaches violin, viola, piano and music theory at a project in Langa Township and teaches short courses in digital audio at the Institute for Film and New Media (UCT).

2006 Iowa Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary Miniature Prints

The Iowa Biennial Exhibition presents an international survey of contemporary miniature prints to be held in August 2006. The purpose of the Iowa Biennial Exhibition is to introduce the public to contemporary prints from around the world while enlarging the collection of works in the Iowa Biennial Exhibition research archives and making them available for academic research, museums, artists and print students alike.

While works within the research archives can never be sold, they will be used to promote a greater awareness of the uniqueness and beauty of the print and print media. Please note that submitted works will not be returned, but instead will become part of The Iowa Biennial Exhibition research archives.

Maximum size in any dimension is 9 cm, including both image and border areas. Works in all print media are eligible. Do not send slides. Only original prints, unframed and unmated, and created since 2004 will be accepted. Please submit no more than three works.

Start: The Nivea Art Award

The KwaZulu-Natal-born art competition, 'Start: The Nivea Art Award', swings into action again, and the search is on for promising artists who want to paint their way to a successful career. If you have heaps of talent and are over 18, yet you have not held your own exhibitions, nor won any major art competitions, here's your chance to make yourself known.

The opportunity awaits you. You could be exhibiting a commissioned artwork at KZNSA Gallery to be viewed by well-known art patrons, collectors and the public. And, you could win substantial cash prizes - first prize is R20 000, second R10 000 and third R5 000. The final works will be catalogued, in a stylish booklet. To enter, all you need to do is submit your completed entry, along with photographs of three to four of your existing artworks and a short artist's statement. Entries close on January 27, 2006.

A prestigious panel of five judges, all well-known artists and/or curators and gallery managers, will be tasked with selecting 20 finalists from entries received from throughout KwaZulu-Natal. Each finalist will receive R1 200 from Nivea to create a unique commissioned artwork. The theme is 'moments of interaction between people, reflecting basic principles of human co-existence: care, reliability, understanding, humanity, love and harmony', which are also Nivea's core values.

The 20 works from the finalists will then be exhibited for sale at an awards ceremony and exhibition opening at KZNSA Gallery on June 27, to which well-known art patrons and the public will be invited. The winners will be announced, and awards and cash prizes presented. The exhibition will run from June 28 to July 16, to allow the public the chance to view or purchase the works.

'Start: The Nivea Art Award' proved a phenomenal success in its first year, attracting over 200 entries. The competition has opened up new opportunities for 2005 winner, Welcome Danca. This talented artist has now completed his diploma in graphic design and is employed painting murals and designing the Nivea's company website. 'This competition has given me invaluable exposure and has given me confidence in my artistic ability. It has allowed me to further my career, and be recognised as an artist on the up-and-up. I am also very excited to be working on my own exhibition', Welcome explained, 'The prize also gave me the opportunity to purchase everything I need to paint - easels, paints, brushes - and I also put down a deposit for a house.'

Call for proposals: 'UPLOAD' 2006 Workshops in Cape Town

'UPLOAD' is about providing an informal space for learning about the many forms of creative expression. It's a chance for diverse individuals to get together, share a thought and stare knowingly at imagery with a beat.

We are looking for proposals for presentations, performances and discussions at our workshops in Cape Town in January/February, April, July and October 2006. We invite people involved in anything from music to film, design, technology and all the gaps in between to speak about what they do.

The following areas are of particular interest, although all proposals will be considered:
- Physical computing and installation art (Arduino, Wiring, Processing)
- Technologies of cooperation (social mobile computing and networks, peer-to-peer production, open content, online activism)
- VJing and performance visuals
- Public and street art
- Live/improvised electronic music, sound art and cutting-edge DJing

Requirements/Considerations:
- 20 - 30min slot (extremely informal). Longer, in-depth sessions are also planned.
- Low-cost, we have a minimal budget (digital projector and PA available)
- Audience participation (if possible)
- Notes on your presentation to publish on our website afterwards
- Transportation and accommodation can be arranged in special cases only

2005 MTN School Art Awards calls for entries

The MTN Foundation has launched the 2005 MTN School Art Awards, which is aimed at fostering the talents of young artists. Introduced in 1998, the MTN School Art Awards recognise and reward young artists for their creative ability and for their commitment to art-related community work at school or in their communities. The awards also recognise educators for their commitment to the discipline.

There are two award categories: the School Award and the Learner Award. The awards are open to Gauteng-based schools and art learners in Grades 11 and 12. The closing date for entries is October 10. Finalists will be announced on November 8, followed by the awards ceremony on November 23.

Says Yvonne Muthien, Group Executive, Corporate Affairs: 'MTN is committed to addressing the critical imbalances in South Africa's art, culture and heritage. We are also committed to sustainable partnerships and are proud to work with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) on this initiative. Through the School Art Awards we hope to contribute to the establishment of a creative and resourceful society and to show that art presents relevant career opportunities. The Awards are part of the MTN Foundation's Arts and Culture portfolio whose objectives are to:

* Promote art, culture and heritage for nation-building;
* Use art as a tool for educational purposes; and
* Support and profile emerging African artists

The MTN art collection is one of the most comprehensive corporate collections of African art on the continent and includes more than 1500 original artworks. The collection forms the core of a far-reaching social empowerment programme and is used to facilitate a range of projects aimed at giving visible support to arts, culture and heritage in South Africa with a nascent expansion into Africa.

Beautiful Struggle: The Thousand Word Project calls for submissions

The World Youth Centre in cooperation with UN Habitat is launching a new global initiative and we want to know if you're down. Basically it goes like this...

The Thousand-Word Project is an international mural project based around the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDG's). This project is uniting young people around the world in a common focus that is at the same time unique to each country/city/locale. The uniting theme for this project is two words: Beautiful Struggle.Young artists from across the world will focus on one of the Millennium Development Goals and bring to life their interpretations of that goal through depicting the attainment of that goal as a beautiful struggle.

The project will be two-fold. The first stage will take place as the international mural programme. The second stage will consist of the artists involved being interviewed by our chief writer on why they chose that particular MDG as part of her research on each locale. This 2nd stage will culminate in the publishing of a book to be distributed throughout junior-high schools and high schools as an educational tool.

This book, to be titled Beautiful Struggle: The Thousand Word Project, will feature each mural created across the globe and will be accompanied by thousand word essays on the locales and problems that young people face in each participating region relating to the Millennium Development Goals.

United Nation's Millennium Development Goals:

1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender and empower women
4. Reduce child mortality
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases

Journal of African Art History and Visual Culture: Call for Papers

'Is African Art History?'

Critical Interventions: Journal of African Art History and Visual Culture is a new peer-reviewed publication for studies in the history of classical, modern, and contemporary African arts, slated to begin publication in Spring 2006. We invite submissions for the inaugural issue titled, 'Is African Art History?' Essays addressing the problem of history in continental African art practice are welcome, especially those that engage directly with ideas of modernity and that propose or critique a clearly articulated methodology.

Critical Interventions will publish scholarly Art Historical essays about objects and critical discourses in African arts and visual cultures. Comparative work rooted in developments in Africa that links African art to the Diasporas, to Europe, Asia or to the Americas will be considered. We are seeking essays that illuminate the place of art in specific historical processes and evaluate the theories and methods produced through the study of African art history.

Critical Interventions will provide a forum for established and younger scholars whose writing is based on extensive research into the problems of modernism and modernity in African art and comparable areas of research. Submissions may focus on any area of modern and contemporary art and visual or material culture, including popular art, neotraditional forms, studio art, film, photography, architecture, and new media. Essays that review the history, appraise the present situation, or propose the future course of modern African art studies will be viewed favourably.

Submissions must be original and previously unpublished work submitted both in hard copy and also in electronic form saved in Microsoft Word. Articles should be between 6500 and 8500 words and may include black and white and colour images scanned to disk at 300dpi. Submissions invited for work to be sold in a variety of venues worldwide

ArtAnts markets and sells giclée prints of artworks internationally. We need thousands of artworks.

We have a unique new marketing strategy for the prints that includes displaying catalogues of art in coffee shops, curio shops, framing shops and other venues worldwide. We keep these venues interested in displaying the art by paying them a commission of 10%. We have special technology for determining which orders result from which catalogues displayed in which venue.

Since we print each catalogue individually, we can display different artworks in each catalogue in each venue, which means that we can represent a large variety of art from many artists.

The giclée printing process allows us to make prints one at a time without storing an inventory of prints. It also allows us and the artist to break even on the first sale and to start making a profit from the second onwards. Video Channel calls for proposals

VideoChannel is looking for video works on the themes 'Self-portrait' and 'Totalitarianism' to be included in its online collection on www.cinematheque.le-musee-divisioniste.org and the offline DVD collection to be presented in the framework of the interactive installation of 'www.rrf2005.newmediafest.org [R][R][F]2005--->XP - global networking project', as well as in selection for presentation on media festivals and exhibitions. It is planned to select a maximum of six to ten video works.

The thematic context 'Self-portrait' and 'Totalitarianism' operates in a narrow and wider sense. The videos have to be submitted as digital files - Quicktime, Real Video or .aviDIVX compression for preview, or URL for preview or download, and the selected works will be required to send as high quality videos as Quicktime or mpeg2DVD (PAL/NTSC) on CD or DVD (data) by snail mail. The videos may have a running time between one and five minutes, with possible exceptions. One submission per artist on each theme only.

Images sought for South African tourism book

Struik Publishers is looking for 200 fresh new images that represent the spirit of South Africa. Do you have photographs that fit the bill?

A survey of departing international tourists showed that these visitors left the country impressed with far more than just the beautiful scenery. They spoke too of friendly hospitable people, of mineral wealth, of wildlife riches, of excellent cuisine, of inspiration... Struik is looking for images that represent this kind of diversity and beauty. Selected images will be used in a mainstream tourist souvenir to be published in November 2006.

The picture quality must obviously be appropriate for use in such a coffee table book: pin-sharp transparencies that are up-to-date, have not been used extensively elsewhere, and that clearly illustrate the places/events described.

So, can you see your country through the eyes of a traveller? While we're not quite going for the warts-and-all approach, or for a wildly artistic take, we are looking for images with a certain freshness to them - images that accurately portray a bright country full of hope, colour and inspiration.

All images must be clearly labelled with the destination and your name. Transparencies are preferable to digital images.

Enjin Museum of Dead Media

Enjin in collaboration with The Trinity Session is embarking on the development of a Museum for Dead Media. The purpose is to call the public's attention to the significance of collecting or preserving one's redundant or dated technology, reflections on ways in which these tools are still applied in creative processes and of course to reflect on the advancements in new technologies and media. Key to this project are questions around what shape and form a museum of dead media could take. Is it a building, a collective networked data system, a discussion forum or a series of presentations and features in future issues of the magazine and dvd supplement. The first steps towards this project manifest in the Hobbs/Neustetter installation at Design Indaba and the call for interest and ideas on creative uses of dead media, and concepts for the 'museum'.

Who is involved?

Enjin is South Africa's leading resource for creative professionals, brings you comprehensive coverage of the art of design, 3D, animation, video, effects, web and interactive design. Enjin addresses the needs of those within the digital media market by providing relevant and forward-thinking content. Now in its sixth year, Enjin Creative Magazine consistently delivers the content that people want to read.

The meeting of Stephen Hobbs and Marcus Neustetter as an artist collaborative fuses their interests in urban social change and virtual culture. Over the years their artistic practices have resulted from experimentation with the juxtaposition of high and low tech, dead and new media interventions. These experiments manifest in public space, galleries and museums and in the arena of their artist lab: the Trinity Session. Taking into consideration the exclusivity of the museum and gallery context, current projects focus on social research and mobile platforms enabling their artistic expression.

Directed by Hobbs and Neustetter, The Trinity Session is a contemporary art production team that investigates the strategies and relationships between art and business, collaborative practice, network development and creative contextual response. As Hobbs' personal artistic interest is the urban environment and Neustetter's the digital and virtual, the thematic focus of The Trinity Session revolves around these subject areas. Heavily informed and influenced by context, The Trinity Session defines its approaches from a position within Johannesburg, South Africa, thusdetermining its attitude tolocal and global debates, networks and partnerships for survival and sustainability of the visual arts industries. By acting as correspondents and consultants, and approaching the work process from a network and 'accommodation and exchange of information' angle, the purpose of the working dynamic is to produce in a cross-platform multidisciplinary way with artists, institutions and corporate brands and services. Tsunami - call for submissions

The current Asian tsunami disaster made it again evident: the human being cannot control the destructive powers of nature.

A Virtual Memorial www.a-virtual-memorial.org and [R][R][F]2005---XP www.newmediafest.org/rrf2005 initiate on occasion of this disaster and in solidarity with all affected people in this human tragedy a net-based art project environment, entitled 'Tsunami'.

The title 'Tsunami' does thematically not only refer to this or similiar disasters in present or past, but beyond that 'Tsunami' is primarily also understood as a symbol for the inevitable, the immutable, for powers of nature, powers of destiny which cannot be controlled by the human being, situations of helplessness of which the human being is irrevocably at the mercy. Has he any chance to escape or take influence?

Nearly everybody wherever he may live has had experiences of that kind in one or the other way already. Artists around the globe are invited to reflect on these traumatic conditions of human life and submit art works, documents, texts or any other material which can be submitted as digital file.

'Tsunami' - this collaborative project will be published and featured on www.a-virtual-memorial.org and www.newmediafest.org/rrf2005 simultaneously and will take part in all coming physical events of [R][R][F]2005--->XP, global networking project by Agricola de Cologne.

Exhibitions and workshops for the 2006 Commonwealth Games

'Ubuntu - To Make a Place' is an exhibition to be staged as a highlight of the Commonwealth Games cultural programme. It will be located in the Melbourne Museum in association with the Spirit of the Games exhibition. 'Ubuntu' will offer visitors an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the cultures gathered in Melbourne for this event. They will see thought-provoking objects made with creativity and skill from materials local to the makers. Outside the exhibition, communities in Melbourne and regional centres will be able to interact with the makers through a series of satellite residencies in schools and galleries. The exhibition will help us understand the differences between cultures, while appreciating the shared creativity of their makers.

In July 2004, representatives from 14 southern countries met for the first time to discuss what it is that they might have to say to each other. This gathering marked the initial phase in a four-year journey designed to develop south-south dialogue that realises the new energy and potential of southern countries emerging from shadows of colonialism. The 'Ubuntu' project, administered by Craft Victoria, arises from this meeting.

The focus of Craft Victoria is to celebrate the 'world at hand'. This involves an appreciation of the skills and materials in our midst, both as an expression of local identity and as a means of adding value to our work. Craft Victoria manages the South Project, which is designed to find ways of giving expression to what it means to live in the south - 'Think global, make local' is one of its core principles.

At this stage, Craft Victoria is seeking expressions of interest from organisations and individuals who might be part of this project. In particular, we are looking for support in:

- distributing information about the opportunities of this exhibition for makers
- assisting makers travelling to Melbourne for the event
- professional development opportunities
- interest in being part of the discussion about the meaning of 'Ubuntu' and its relevance beyond South Africa

The South Project is a three year journey leading towards a Festival of the South in 2008. This journey entails four meetings where artists and writers can continue the exchange about what it means to live in the south. The first was in Melbourne, July 2004. 2005 will be in Auckland/Wellington (New Zealand), 2006 will be Santiago (Chile) and the final gathering in 2007 will be in South African (location to be confirmed).

'Ubuntu - to make a place' is one of many projects based on collaborative possibilities. Countries of the south are conditioned to be gazing northwards. This is an opportunity to look to each other and see what we can achieve together.

2004/05 - Themes

America - Following the USA elections we reflect on America. Despotic Empire or land of the free? America has established itself as a sole superpower - but to what purpose? There seem to a lot of people either side of the fence when it comes to loving or hating America. Does size matter? What does America mean, politically, economically, demographically, etc.? Does everyone believe the ideals that America holds dear - freedom, democracy? Are there truly any things which are self-evident? The deadline for copy and artwork is December 10, 2004.

Language - Reflections and explorations of the English language in its many forms and variations. In examining language are we looking at how our language shapes how we think, and therefore who we think we are? What would it mean for humanity to have a truly global language, should it ever occur? The deadline for copy and artwork is February 10, 2005.

Rise and Fall of God And the Devil - the inspirations of the sublime and the profane. Is God particularly relevant to the age in which we live? Secularism; do we actually need God any more? Have we grown up? The deadline for copy and artwork is April 10, 2005.

Second Generation - the impact of being the children of emigrants, (political, economic, nomadic), born in lands foreign to your parents, but so familiar to you. The tensions of the two cultures and values, the Old Ways contrasting with the New Ways, the irony of parents emigrating to provide a better life for their children, but still wanting their family to follow the old traditions, culture, values, language even, and religion, and the fabulous art forms that evolve from the melting pot of humanity the Global Village can and does produce. The deadline for copy and artwork is June 10, 2005.

Games - from the social games we play: white lies, flirtation, roles in society; to actual contests of strength, intellect or guile between people and countries. Olympian feats to drawing room farce - the world as the artist's game board. The deadline for copy and artwork is August 10, 2005.

Degrees of consciousness -The subtlety of consciousness and the scales on which it occurs. Sentience; self-awareness. From a single neuron to a whole universe. Where does it come from and can it be reproduced artificially? Is it just an illusion? What does it actually mean, if anything, to be able to reason about one's existence? The deadline for copy and artwork is October 10, 2005.

'Etcetera' - a new section edited collectively by the editorial team, it will contain approaches and material that don't fit into the more formal areas of The Surface: we want to highlight Internet-based installations, films, music, avant garde work, new projects online; in fact, anything that feeds our theme and provides surprise. This section will be accumulative with material, links and other media being retained and compacting as the issues proceed.

'Postcards from the edge' will be our own central pivot to this new section - it could be seen as artistic form of Bogging where artists and writers are connected from the same location - the writer produces a short piece of prose/poetry/text as the message of the postcard and the rtist/photographer creates an image. It will be about a specific place - in a one off production or as a series.

AVA invites submissions

The Association For Visual Arts (AVA) in Cape Town invites submissions from visual artists who wish to exhibit at AVA from 2004 onwards. The Selection Committee of the AVA meets every two months to review submissions and the next meeting takes place on Wednesday, November 19. Selection meetings take place every second month thereafter.

Interested artists should bring to the gallery six to eight works (these can be supplemented by visual material such as slides and photographs), a CV and a short letter of intent or an artist's statement. The committee is most interested in reviewing the work that the artists wish to exhibit or else their most recent works. Artists can collect their works the day after the meeting.

In addition, any curators wishing to curate exhibitions for AVA should submit proposals to AVA's Selection Committee.

RESIDENCIES

Call for Applications Art Omi International Artists Residency

The Art Omi International Artists' Residency offers visual artists three-week residencies in the month of July. The Arts Center is located approximately two-and-a-half hours north of New York City in the historic Hudson River Valley. Artists are provided with room and board and studio facilities are set among the 300 acres of rolling green hills. The programme includes a critic-in-residence who facilitates an ongoing dialogue in studio visits, as well as day visits from dealers, curators, artists and critics from New York City.

The residency session concludes with a major exhibit at the Art Omi Center, to which members of the art world from both upstate New York and New York City are invited. Each year more than 1000 people attend this event, which includes a special dinner. Artists pay for travel, materials, and donate a work of art created during the residency to the Art Omi Foundation Collection.

Application requirements:
1. Six 35mm colour slides for carousel projector. CDs, or video tapes or DVDs for new media artists only, whose work is time-based or kinetic and cannot be seen well in slide format. Any work that moves or is based in video or film can be viewed on CD, DVD or video. All 2-D and 3-D work that is still will only be viewed in slide format.
Note: do not send catalogues, glass slides, brochures or folders. These extra materials will not be considered. Each slide should be labelled with your name and the number of the slides corresponding to the slide script. The top of each slide should be clearly marked. VHS tapes should be NTSC format cued for a 3-5 minute viewing. CD-ROMs will be viewed on an IBM-compatible PC.
2. A numbered list of slides (or CD/video script) submitted with title, date of work, medium and size. At the top of the page list the artist's name, address, telephone number, email address, nationality, age, sex and languages spoken.

Global Arts Village Fellowships

Global Arts Village is an emerging international residential art centre in New Delhi, India. We encourage diversity and multicultural exchange among creative people of all kinds. We practice community living, sharing meals and evening activities.

The Village enables artists to experience a natural, eco-friendly environment for creative work. The Global Arts Village is a three-acre property that includes gardens, a multi-purpose studio, sculpture workshop, a meditation and performance hall, a common building, a dance studio, performance spaces and accommodations. The buildings are in accordance with the ancient wisdom of Vastu, which harmonizes man-made structures with their natural environments.

The Village offers residency programmes to emerging, mid-career and established artists in all major creative disciplines. We are building a community that blends art, culture and consciousness. Individuals with exploratory spirits are invited to join.

Fellowships / Artist-in-Residence
The Global Arts Village offers full and partial fellowships, several specific fellowship opportunities and an Artist-in-residence programme. All programmes include accommodation (standard or duplex), laundry service, three meals per day, studio or workspace (shared or private), initial welcoming celebration (presentation of past work and project plan to local artists and other fellowship recipients), concluding exhibition opportunity and other benefits dependent on the fellowship programme and the dates of stay. All recipients are asked to donate fellowship-specific hours of community work per week (cooking, researching, organising, leadership of a workshop, assisting or teaching a class, promotion, event planning). Partners of artists are invited to stay for US$15 per day.

45-day residencies begin on February 17, April 3, May 19, July 3, August 18, October 2, November 17 and January 1 of each year. 90-day Residencies begin on February 17, May 19, August 18 and November 17 of each year.

Artist Full Fellowship (90 Day)
The fully funded residency has no programme fee. Recipients contribute US$9 for meals per day and a total of 7 hours of community work per week.

Artist Partial Fellowship (90 Day)

Performing Arts Fellowship (45 / 90 Day)
The Global Arts Village offers full and partial fellowships for various categories of performing arts. All recipients are asked to donate 7 hours of community work per week. Under full fellowships, only US$9/day has to be contributed for meals. The 45-day partial fellowship has a reduced programme fee of $25/day for standard accommodation and $30/day for duplex accommodation. The 90 day partial fellowship programme has a rate of $20/day for standard accommodation and $25/day for duplex accommodation.

Emerging Artist Fellowship (under 27 yrs; 90 Day)
These fully funded 90-day residencies are offered to creative people who have graduated from a University programme. There is no programme fee but US$9 per day has to be contributed for meals. Recipients contribute a total of 15 hours of community work per week.

Student Fellowships (45 Day)
Fully funded residencies are offered to students currently enrolled in a University programme. There is no programme fee, we only ask that US$ 9 per day be contributed for meals. Recipients contribute a total of 15 hours of community work per week.

Professional Development Fellowship (45 / 90 Day)
Fully-funded fellowship opportunities are offered: curators, visual art coordinators, grant writers, chefs/culinary artists, performing arts coordinators, organic farmers, organisation developers. The Fellows contribute 7 hours of communal work per week plus 15 hours of fellowship-specific work. There is no programme fee but recipients contribute US $ 9 for meals per day.

Site-Specific Sculpture Fellowship (45 Day)
This fully funded residency has no programme fee. A materials allowance of US$200-500 is offered dependent on the project proposal. The artist is to donate the site-specific sculpture unconditionally to the Village. Artists put in 7 hours of community work per week and contribute US $ 9 for meals per day.

Artist in Residence (45 / 90 Day)
The entire Artist-in-residence programme is subsidised. For 45 days, the programme fee is US$35 for standard accommodation and US$45 for a duplex room. For a stay of 90 days, the charges are US$30/day for a standard room with shared studio/work space and US $40 for a duplex room with private studio. All artists in residence are asked to donate seven hours of community work per week.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, there is no deadline. The application can be submitted via email or post.

Visual Artists can apply for residencies throughout the world. Yeoville Children's Mosaic Park seeks funding contributions

The concept of a Children's Mosaic Park is inspired by the Melbourne Botanical Gardens, which has special theme gardens especially designed for children as well as the work of Gaudi, who created the Park Guell, with mosaicked areas and sculptures in Barcelona. The feel of the park in general, which I hope can be achieved, is inspired by the Forodhani Gardens in old Stone Town in Zanzibar. This park area is situated near the harbour and the Sultan�s Palace and serves as an evening gathering place for families, couples, children and anyone who wants to go for a stroll and socialise in the evening. People gather and buy food from the many vendors who braai seafood and kebabs on their grills while an ancient sugarcane pressing machine provides liquid refreshment.

What I feel is very important with regard to the proposed Children's Mosaic Park in the Yeoville Park, is that it will give children their own, beautiful, child-friendly and secure space within which to play. The game tables will provide adults with peaceful recreation activities, an alternative to drinking or watching TV. The other decorative elements will serve to enhance the beauty of the park, giving a message that the community in Yeoville is not being neglected, and will help ordinary residents 'reclaim' their park. Only by making it as safe, attractive and as inspiring as possible, can one encourage all residents to use the park.

Cordoning off an area for children would, I feel, accomplish the following:

1. Make it easier for parents to watch over their children.
2. Define it as a child's area, making the children feel as if they 'own' that space, by creating decorations that are child-sized.
3. Be a decorative area, which will enhance the overall look of the park, thereby helping to dispel the 'no-go', neglected air it currently posesses.

The park would consist of:

1. A low, curvy wall decorated with tiles, mirror tiles, cowrie shells and beads surrounding the play area. It would be low enough for children to sit and walk along it.
2. 12 mosaic animal sculptures placed around the playground equipment.
3. A decorative wrought iron archway saying 'Yeoville Children's Mosaic Playground', with a mosaic animal on the wall on either side of it.
4. Sunflower lights, made out of steel, with holes punched in them to let out the light, along the wall.
5. Child-sized and adult benches covered in mosaic in the play area.
6. Decorative fairy lights wrapped around trees, coloured lights strung across the play area, and ball-shaped lights, made out of tin can strips with globes in them, hung from trees.
5. Normal sized tables and benches dotted around the park, decorated with mosaic and with chess, checkers etc games mosaicked into the tops of the tables.
6. A large mosaic map of Africa on the front of the rec centre facing onto Raleigh street. It would have a statement encouraging the unity of Africans from all over the continent.
7. A world globe made of cement placed near the entrance.
I have estimated I would need approximately R300 000 to cover the costs of materials, craftsmen, builders and a salary for myself. Donated materials such as cement, building sand, grout, tile bond, tiles, beads, bricks etc. are welcome, too. A breakdown of costs is available on request.

The Michaelis School of Fine Art is seeking to appoint a new staff member to teach in either the Discourse and Theory of Art or in a studio-based discipline.

Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Fellowships at the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage

'Theorizing Cultural Heritage'

Cultural heritage is today a rubric of ever-expanding scope. It is used globally as a basis for multinational, national, state, and local programs and governance. Cultural heritage is also the focus of ideas and programs generated by hundreds of non-governmental organizations, community-based and advocacy groups, and even businesses. Yet the concept of 'cultural heritage' is vastly under-theorized. It has lacked an academic, disciplinary base; has generated only an attenuated theoretical literature; and has generally left the bearers of cultural heritage out of the discussion.

Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Fellows at the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage help refine the theoretical framework for cultural heritage and expand it to include grassroots voices. Reflecting the perspectives of academic specialists, civil society groups, and public cultural organizations, fellows� work informs dialogues and practice across social, political, and disciplinary boundaries, as well as indicating future directions for policy.

The Smithsonian hosts six to eight fellows for each of three years to work on the theoretical development of the concept of cultural heritage. Fellows examined the relationship between cultural heritage and political representation (2004-05) and the economics of cultural heritage (2005-06); the third year of the program (2006-07) concentrates on the arts. The fellows are humanities-oriented thinkers and practitioners engaged in the work of academic institutions, public organizations, and cultural communities. Applicants for 2006-07 will be interested in developing ideas, principles, and frameworks for understanding the artistic dimension of cultural heritage. Keeping in mind the concern with grassroots cultural communities, applicants will focus their critical inquiry on such issues as community recognition of or support for art (visual, language, music, dance, architecture) as heritage; the relationship between individual or group agency and local or national tradition; the relationship between the institutional contexts of cultural heritage and its form and content; and how art reflects and articulates social identity. Applicants will demonstrate originality of approach and significant potential for making a contribution to the formulation of cultural heritage policy and practice.

The Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage - where cultural heritage is the subject of ongoing, daily intellectual and practical activity - hosts the fellows. Given the Center�s location in Washington, D.C., and its strong connections to international and national institutions, service organizations, and nongovernmental and community groups, fellows partake of a rich environment and find colleagues and cultural policymakers deeply interested in their work.

Applicants need not be US citizens to be eligible, and approximately half of the fellows are drawn from outside the United States. Fellowships include a stipend and an allowance for travel to and from Washington, DC, as necessary. Please note: These fellowships are not intended to support undergraduate or graduate studies, or research. Projects will not be considered for the re-writing of dissertations, editing of texts, or the preparation of textbooks or anthologies. Applicants whose native language is not English are expected to have a sufficiently good command of spoken English so that they can fully discuss, debate, and exchange ideas and practices about cultural heritage.

Application Process for 2006-07 Fellowships: Submit a letter of interest (not to exceed three pages), in English. This letter should outline the proposed work and how it will further the theoretical development of the concept of cultural heritage in relation to the arts. Applicants should attach a resumée or CV and include the proposed dates of the residency. Based on letters of interest, a limited number of applicants will be invited to submit full proposals. Notifications should be sent by February 28, 2006. Full proposals will be due April 1.

Residency Term: Six weeks to five months, between September 1, 2006, and July 31, 2007.

ArtMoves Africa: Mobility of artists and cultural operators within the African continent

ArtMoves Africa (AMA) is an independent non-profit association aiming to facilitate cultural and artistic exchanges within the African continent. AMA offers travel funds to artists, arts professionals and cultural operators living and working in Africa to travel within and between the five African regions in order to engage in the exchange of information, the enhancement of skills, the development of informal networks and the pursuit of co-operation.

Background:
AMA is a project initiated by the Young Arab Theatre Fund (YATF) together with a group of African and Arab organisations to facilitate and encourage the mobility of artists and cultural operators within the African continent. In 2001, YATF participated in meetings in Egypt, Kenya and Zimbabwe, together with different organisations and cultural activists from Africa and the Arab world. The meetings aimed at linking organisations and individuals, and creating informal continent-wide networks. The participants agreed that one of the major obstacles for artists and cultural professionals in Africa was the persistent lack of funds specifically allocated to support travel.

Objectives:
* Facilitate cultural exchanges in Africa for individual artists and cultural operators, and cultural organizations
* Encourage artists and cultural operators to exchange experiences, information and ideas towards shared projects and artistic collaborations
* Give artists and cultural operators the opportunity to gain a better knowledge of the context and the cultural environment in the different regions
* Encourage independent initiatives and small projects by giving artists and cultural operators the opportunity to meet with their counterparts and partners
* Give artists and cultural operators the opportunity to attend festivals in order to see each other's work to enrich their own creativity
* Give artists and cultural operators the opportunity to enhance their artistic or technical skills in participating in highly professional artistic and arts management workshops, seminars and residencies for artists
* Encourage the mobility of artists and cultural professionals as well as the mobility of information
Legal Status:
For the first year, AMA will be functioning as one of the programmes of the YATF, but with an independent selection committee and coordinator. By the end of 2005 ArtMoves Africa shall be registered as an independent international association in Africa.
